"Exploration by Random Network Distillation" implementation in TensorFlow
January 1, 2019 – May 1, 2019
I worked on this project during my second semester with Cal Launchpad. TensorFlow implementation of reinforcement learning paper on encouraging exploration of an uncertain environment through intrinsic curiosity-driven rewards. Personal contribution includes implementing Advantage Actor Critic algorithm in TensorFlow and educating new members on the team on Markov Decision Processes and the classic RL concepts upon which neural network-based approximations such as AC are built.
MV JSA Blog / Member Portal
July 1, 2016 – September 1, 2016
This is the member portal and moderated blogging platform for the Monta Vista chapter of Junior State of America, built with Node.js and MongoDB. It allows members to create and submit richly formatted blog posts to share political ideas, which are reviewed by admins prior to publication. Additionally, it allows admins to automatically track activity points for users by simply marking attendance. I automated keyword-tagging for blog posts by implementing the eigenvalue-based TextRank algorithm for ranking keyword importance.
fbash
April 1, 2016 – Present
Terminal over Facebook Messenger fbash is a cross-platform daemon which allows users to run shell commands on their computer or a server remotely through Facebook Messenger. It takes advantage of Messenger's various features, including sending attachments, joining group chats, and advanced syntax highlighting to provide an experience better than that of a traditional SSH client. It is published as an NPM module to be installed globally. After installation, it can be started through the command-line and runs as a background process.
SwiftAssist
January 1, 2016 – Present
SwiftAssist is an application that revolutionizes health emergency response using crowdsourcing. For example, if someone is having an allergic reaction and they do not have their epinephrine injector (EpiPen), they can press a button on their Pebble smartwatch or iPhone to notify nearby users who can help them. These users recieve an alert on their phones and can view directions to the location of the emergency, along with what type of emergency it is. I built the Pebble smartwatch app using the Pebble.js SDK. I continued working on SwiftAssist after the hackathon, and built an Android client for the application, which allowed users to login, send, and receive emergency notifications.
Cultural Fit Analysis
The candidate demonstrates a strong drive for innovation and entrepreneurship through co-founding a company and leading various development initiatives. Their involvement in academic research and personal projects outside of core employment suggests intellectual curiosity and a self-starter mentality. The breadth of experience, from finance to AI to educational roles, indicates a versatile individual who could adapt to diverse team environments. However, the specific cultural fit for a 'Backend Engineer' role would depend on the team's emphasis on innovation vs. stability, and individual vs. team contributions, which cannot be fully assessed without more data.
Soft Skills & Operational Fit
The candidate's project and work history suggest strong initiative, leadership, and a proactive approach to problem-solving. Experience in teaching and mentoring (MathAndCoding) indicates good communication and collaboration skills. The variety of roles and projects implies adaptability and a willingness to learn new technologies. However, without psychometric test results, a definitive assessment of work attitude, stress handling, and team collaboration is not possible.
